â„šī¸ What is this?

The Insurance Ombudsman is a quasi-judicial body appointed by the Government of India to resolve insurance disputes between policyholders and insurance companies. Filing a complaint is completely free. The Ombudsman issues a binding "Award" within 90 days. Companies are bound by the Award and cannot appeal it (only policyholders can challenge an Ombudsman Award in court if they wish). The Ombudsman can award up to ₹50 Lakhs in life insurance matters and up to ₹30 Lakhs in general/health insurance matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is filing an Ombudsman complaint really free? +
Yes. There is absolutely no fee to file an Insurance Ombudsman complaint. The process is completely free for policyholders. Our charges only apply for our work in preparing and filing — and only if your case is resolved successfully.
Is the Ombudsman Award binding on the insurance company? +
Yes. The Ombudsman Award is legally binding on the insurance company. Companies must comply with the Award within 30 days. Companies cannot appeal an Ombudsman Award — only the policyholder has the right to challenge it in court if they disagree.
Do I need to first complain to the company before going to Ombudsman? +
Yes. You must first file a complaint with the company's Grievance Redressal Officer (GRO) and either receive an unsatisfactory resolution or not receive any response within 30 days — before you can approach the Ombudsman.
What is the maximum amount the Ombudsman can award? +
For life insurance: up to ₹50 Lakhs. For general and health insurance: up to ₹30 Lakhs. For group insurance: up to ₹50 Lakhs. For cases exceeding these limits, the Ombudsman can still adjudicate but the Award may be capped.
